      Swedish Drill was a system of Swedish gymnastics invented at the turn of the 19th century by Pehr Henrik Ling, a fencing instructor in southern Sweden. His goal was to promote exercise as a means of restoring public health.   Singleton’s story is a complex one, but the simplified version goes something like this: starting the mid s, Per Henrik Ling’s system of Swedish gymnatics was adopted throughout England and Europe. Ling’s approach was similar to the YMCA’s–it was oriented toward the development of the “whole person,” not just the body.

    Educational gymnastics was systematised in the s by Pehr Henrik Ling's son Hjalmar, who was a GCI teacher and the unknown author of Swedish school gymnastics. His highly regulated lessons, 'the Swedish gymnastics system', was taught in many parts of the civilized world well into the post-war period.
